Theodor Bilharz Research Institute was established pursuant to an agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Government of Egypt in 1964, and was officially inaugurated in 1978. The Institute is one of the leading medical research and training bodies, and operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. It is the first national research institute of its kind in the Middle East, specializing in research on diseases of the digestive system, liver, kidneys, and urinary tract, as well as their associated complications.

The Institute aspires to become a leading center for research, training, and treatment of endemic diseases in Egypt and across Africa. Its mission is to advance medical research aimed at improving the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of endemic diseases affecting the digestive system, liver, kidneys, and urinary system. In doing so, the Institute seeks to address the technical, social, and economic needs of Egypt and the region, while also providing comprehensive training for young researchers to equip them with modern scientific approaches to critical health challenges.

The Institute’s strategic framework is built upon six core programs: control research, diagnostic research, therapeutic research, pathological change research, clinical research, and advanced scientific technology and quality control. These programs rely on cutting-edge fields such as biotechnology, genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and other advanced technologies. Through this approach, the Institute aims to transform traditional basic science activities into modern, application-oriented research that supports societal needs, strengthens links with production and industrial sectors, and fosters scientific and technological innovation. This strategy is implemented in close collaboration with relevant national and international scientific institutions, while providing both scientific and financial support to research and development activities.
