A New Strategic Collaboration to Enhance Medical Research and Training in Egypt: Memorandum of Understanding Between TBRI and Cleopatra Hospitals Group

In a step that reflects the national direction toward supporting effective partnerships between research institutions and major medical entities, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cleopatra Hospitals Group. The agreement aims to unify research efforts, develop training programs, and enhance professional competencies across various medical and pharmaceutical specialties. This MoU represents an important step toward a more integrated collaborative system that seeks to strengthen applied research, empower medical professionals, and add tangible value to the healthcare sector. 

The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director and Chairman of the Board of TBRI  and Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ezz El-Din Mahmoud Abdel Aal, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Cleopatra Hospitals Group, in the presence of a distinguished group of professors and specialists from both sides. This underscores the significance of the partnership, which aims to advance scientific research, exchange expertise, and develop the medical training ecosystem in Egypt. 

The memorandum includes cooperation across several key areas, foremost among them the organization of practical training programs in the field of pharmacy. Cleopatra Hospitals Group will receive trainees from the Institute to benefit from the advanced training system provided by the group, in accordance with its internal regulations. The agreement also covers the implementation of joint scientific research and studies to be published in accordance with approved legal frameworks within Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, ensuring the protection of the intellectual, scientific, and financial rights of both parties, as well as safeguarding intellectual property related to any pre-existing innovations or technologies prior to the partnership. 

The collaboration further extends to the field of clinical pharmacy through the exchange of expertise, joint research, development of training mechanisms, and technology transfer. In addition, the MoU includes organizing awareness events and educational workshops aimed at raising health awareness and enhancing the skills of medical and pharmaceutical professionals. 

The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Prof. Dr. Osama Badary, Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at Ain Shams University and Advisor to the Institute Director for Pharmacy Affairs; Prof. Dr. Abdel Rahim Mourad, Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at Misr University for Science and Technology.From Cleopatra Hospitals Group, Dr. Adel El-Ansary, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Karim Awad, Executive Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Dr. Wathiq El-Setouhy, Director of the Supporting Sector for Medication Therapy Management and Pharmaceutical Solutions. 

Also in attendance from the Pharmacology Department and members of the Clinical Pharmacy Unit at the Institute were Assoc. Prof. Walaa Hamido El-Ma‘dawy and Dr. Ahmed Said Hendawy, in addition to Prof. Dr. El-Sayed Saleh, Head of the Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Medicinal Chemistry Division at the Institute, and Assoc. Prof.  Safia Samir El-Naggar, Director  of the Institute Director’s Office for External Affairs and Scientific Cooperation. 

In a statement during the signing ceremony, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz emphasized that this agreement represents a pivotal step toward strengthening ties between leading medical and research institutions in Egypt, achieving mutual benefit, and contributing to the advancement of scientific research and healthcare services. He noted that the MoU opens wide horizons for developing training and qualification programs and supports the Institute’s efforts in knowledge transfer and the application of the latest scientific practices within the research and healthcare systems, positively impacting the quality of services provided to society and enhancing Egypt’s position in medical research and pharmaceutical development. 

For his part, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Ezz El-Din expressed his pleasure at concluding this partnership, affirming that it will enable both parties to benefit mutually from research and training capabilities, contribute to developing and enhancing the efficiency of medical and pharmaceutical cadres, and directly reflect on the quality of healthcare services provided. 

The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding comes as a new step in the path of effective institutional collaboration, in line with Egypt’s Vision for sustainable development in the healthcare and scientific research sectors. It supports the integration of roles among leading institutions to build a more advanced healthcare system based on research, knowledge, and capacity building.
