In a new achievement reflecting Theodor Bilharz Research Institute’s commitment to keeping pace with the latest global surgical technologies and strengthening its role as an advanced platform for medical training and knowledge transfer, the Institute’s Urology Department, in collaboration with United Trade Alliance (UTA) and Potent, organized a specialized international surgical training course, HoLEP Live Surgery Course, focusing on Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP).
Held over two days under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Acting Director of the Institute and Chairman of the Board of Directors, the course brought together a distinguished group of experts and specialists from Egypt, the United States, and China, with the participation of physicians from several Arab countries, including Algeria, Jordan, and Yemen.
The event featured the first regional demonstration of the new Holmium Potent Laser platform, representing a valuable addition to the training program, which combined specialized scientific lectures with live surgical demonstrations. This provided participants with an opportunity to learn about the latest HoLEP techniques and observe their practical application on real surgical cases.
The participating experts included Prof. Liu Chunxiao, Head of the Urology Department at Zhujiang Hospital, Southern Medical University, China, and Prof. Hazem El-Mansy, Head of Endourology and Urinary Stone Surgery at Houston Methodist, USA. Dr. Loay Abbas, a researcher in the Urology Department at Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, served as the course director.
The course was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Reham Said, Head of the Institute’s Surgical Clinical Research Division, and led by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Hussein, Head of the Urology Department. A distinguished group of urology professors and department leaders also participated in chairing the scientific sessions and moderating the discussions. The event also featured active participation from the Institute’s Urology Department team and the Anesthesia Department team, headed by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Zidan.
The training course featured an intensive scientific and practical program. On the first day, Prof. Dr. Hazem El-Mansy delivered a lecture entitled “Building a HoLEP Program: From Learning Curve to Challenging Cases,” addressing the development of HoLEP surgical programs and the transition from the learning and training stages to managing more challenging surgical cases.
The first day also included three live HoLEP surgical cases, allowing participants to follow the surgical procedures in real time, while engaging in discussions and exchanging expertise on various technical aspects involved in managing the cases.
The second day featured a lecture by Prof. Liu Chunxiao entitled “Holmium Potent: A New Generation Laser Platform for HoLEP,” focusing on the new Holmium laser platform and its applications in prostate enucleation surgery. The program also included three additional live surgical cases, bringing the total number of live cases performed during the two-day course to six.
For his part, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director of the Institute, emphasized that hosting this international event reflects the Institute’s commitment to providing medical professionals with access to the latest global expertise and technologies, while integrating scientific training with direct clinical application. This, he noted, contributes to developing physicians’ skills and enhancing the quality and efficiency of medical practice in the field of urological surgery.
He further highlighted that organizing a live surgical course with the participation of international experts from the United States and China, alongside leading Egyptian urology professors, represents a model of integration between training, knowledge transfer, and practical application. He noted that the event reflects the Institute’s direction toward expanding scientific and medical collaboration and providing advanced training programs that benefit medical professionals both in Egypt and abroad.
He also emphasized the importance of such events in building bridges of scientific communication among physicians from different countries and facilitating the exchange of expertise and experience in urological surgery, thereby creating further opportunities for future collaboration and joint training.
At the conclusion of the event, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz honored the participating experts and professors in recognition of their efforts and contributions to the success of the course and the enrichment of its scientific and training content. Commemorative shields presented by Theodor Bilharz Research Institute were awarded to the participants as a gesture of appreciation for the valuable scientific and surgical expertise they shared with the course attendees.
This event further demonstrates that Theodor Bilharz Research Institute is not limited to providing medical services and conducting scientific research, but also serves as a platform for advanced medical training and international knowledge exchange. Through hosting leading international experts, organizing live surgical courses, and providing physicians and specialists with access to the latest technologies, the Institute contributes to the advancement of medical practice and strengthens its position as a scientific and medical institution capable of keeping pace with global developments across various specialties.
