Theodor Bilharz Research Institute Launches Early Detection Initiative for Diabetes to Support Prevention and Promote Public Health

As part of its national mission and leading role in supporting public health and establishing preventative practices within workplaces, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI)  launched a comprehensive initiative for the early detection of diabetes and its precursors. This initiative, under the patronage of Professor Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Director of the Institute and Chairman of the Board, is being implemented by the Quality and Patient Safety Unit under the supervision of Professor Dr. Hanan Ali Sayed. It reflects the Institute's ongoing commitment to disseminating health awareness and raising the level of preventative awareness among its employees and visitors.

The initiative began at the start of January and will continue throughout the month. It commenced with an introductory awareness lecture, prior to the start of the testing and screening campaign, entitled "Diabetes in the Workplace," presented by Professor Dr. Samia Ali Abdo, Professor of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Capital University, emphasized the importance of early detection of diabetes and its pivotal role in preventing complications and maintaining performance efficiency and quality of life within the workplace. She presented a comprehensive scientific overview addressing the concept of the disease, its causes, pathological mechanisms, and its health and occupational impacts. This initiative aims to raise health awareness about one of the most widespread and impactful chronic diseases affecting public health.

The initiative includes free diabetes and prediabetes tests for all institute employees, outpatients and their families, and anyone wishing to check their health status. This underscores the institute's commitment to expanding preventive services and making them available free of charge, based on the belief in everyone's right for safe and free healthcare.

specialized team from the Clinical Chemistry Department, including Dr. Doaa Mamdouh and Dr. Asmaa Fteah, are participating in implementing the initiative, along with the active participation of a large number of the institute's medical and health staff, as well as laboratory technicians and nursing staff, presented a comprehensive plan reflecting the institute's readiness and institutional capacity to implement impactful community health initiatives.

In this context, Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz emphasized that launching this initiative aligns with Theodor Bilharz Research Institute's strategy, which prioritizes prevention and early detection as the first line of defense against chronic diseases, particularly diabetes. He noted that the institute's role extends beyond providing treatment; it also includes raising health awareness and adopting impactful community initiatives that contribute to improving the quality of life for individuals and supporting the health of society as a whole, in line with the Egyptian government's efforts to enhance the healthcare system.

Through this initiative and other health and medical initiatives, TBRI continues to affirm its mission of serving patients and the community, and promoting a culture of health reassurance, calling on everyone to take advantage of the initiative and conduct the necessary tests to check their blood sugar levels, based on the fact that early detection is the first step towards a healthier, safer and more stable life.
