Theodor Bilharz Research Institute Ranks Among the Leading Research Centers Regionally in the 2025 SCImago Ranking
The event was organized in cooperation with SCImago, the global publishing and analytics company Elsevier, and the Arab Union of Scientific Research Councils, within the framework of supporting regional competitiveness and enhancing the standing of scientific research in the region.In this context, Theodor Bilharz Research Institute (TBRI) ranked 44th out of 317 research centers from different countries including Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar.
Professor Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Acting Director of Theodor Bilharz Research Institute and Chairman of the Board, stated that the 2025 SCImago ranking reflects the Institute’s research and innovation performance over the previous five years (2020–2024). He noted that the Institute achieved remarkable progress across a large number of main and sub-indicators compared to the 2024 ranking.
He emphasized that both the Research Indicator and the Societal Indicator witnessed significant improvement, with the Leadership Indicator increasing by 17%, the Excellence Indicator by 31.5%, and the proportion of high-quality publications in Q1 journals rising by 25%.
In addition, the Output Indicator increased by 16.2%, the Scientific Talent Pool Indicator by 3.8%, and Open Access publishing increased by 17.6%.
Professor Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz further added that the International Collaboration and Regional Collaboration indicators recorded notable growth of 18.7% and 39.5%, respectively, in addition to a 33.3% increase in Industry Collaboration, reflecting the Institute’s success in expanding its research partnership network at the local, regional, and international levels, and in strengthening the linkage between scientific research and applied developmental needs.
Regarding societal performance, Dr. Abdel Aziz pointed out that the Institute made clear progress compared to the previous year, as the Inbound Links Indicator—which reflects the frequency of use of the Institute’s official website link—increased by 72.7%.
Moreover, the Web Size Indicator rose by 5.1%, alongside a 22.7% increase in the share of papers in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reflecting the growing digital presence of the Institute and the relevance of its research outputs to priority societal and developmental issues.
The announcement of the ranking results took place during a broad international and regional event attended by several leaders and experts, including Dr. Abdel Majeed Bin Emara, Secretary-General of the Arab Union of Scientific Research Councils; Dr. Hossam Osman, Deputy Minister of Higher Education for Innovation, Artificial Intelligence, and Scientific Research; and Dr. Gina El-Feky, Acting President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology and General Supervisor of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank.
The event was also attended by Mr. Isidro Aguillo, Senior Scientific Advisor to the SCImago Ranking; Dr. Mohamed Esty, Vice President of Analytical Services at Elsevier; and Eng. Magid El-Sadek, Head of the National Information Network at the Academy and Secretary-General of the Egyptian Knowledge Bank.
In conclusion, Professor Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz affirmed that the progress achieved across most SCImago indicators is the result of the Institute’s adoption of policies supporting high-quality scientific publishing, encouraging collaboration with experts and peers from Arab and international research centers and universities, as well as continuous efforts to develop the Institute’s electronic portal as a key interface reflecting its activities, services, and research and medical capabilities.He also expressed his sincere appreciation to all Institute staff, including research faculty members and their assistants, administrative and technical staff, and nursing teams, commending their dedicated efforts and reaffirming the commitment to continue working toward achieving more advanced positions regionally and internationally in the future.
