Memorandum of Understanding between the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute

ICGEB is an intergovernmental organization that aims to provide a global center of excellence in research, training, and technology transfer in genetic engineering and biotechnology, supporting member states in achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Theodor Bilharz Research Institute is a governmental medical research institution affiliated with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Arab Republic of Egypt. It aims to support biomedical sciences and produce research outputs that contribute to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of endemic diseases, particularly schistosomiasis and viral hepatitis, in addition to research on gastrointestinal cancers.

The agreement includes the following areas of cooperation:

First: Developing new curricula for the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, schistosomiasis, and others. Developing diagnostic tools and treatments using biotechnology and nanotechnology. Transforming research into prototypes for industrial application.

Second: Cancer Research: This includes the study of liver and gastrointestinal cancers, including molecular mechanisms, oncogenes, suppressor genes, and signaling pathways.

Third: Testing of natural peptides extracted from natural organisms with potential medical efficacy.

The terms of cooperation will be implemented through joint research, participation in scientific events, exchange of information and scientific publications, scientific visits, training programs, workshops, and joint applications for grants and research funding.

The agreement will enter into force upon signing by both parties and will remain in effect for five years, renewable.
